Unfortunately, our lifestyle appears on our teeth; years of drinking coffee, tea, or red wine, as well as smoking, can darken your teeth. Age is also a factor and all of us will notice a change in our teeth colour as we age. Don’t let your teeth colour hold you back, ask us about teeth whitening! Our whitening services are easy and non-invasive, and can remove years of stain and dark colour from your teeth.

 What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth Whitening is a process of whitening the teeth’s natural structure. Teeth Whitening only whitens natural tooth structure and does not whiten fillings, porcelain or dentures. If done correctly, teeth whitening is safe and does not damage teeth or gums

How is it done?

There are 3 ways to whiten teeth – In Office Systems, Take home systems, or a combination of both.

IN OFFICE WHITENING SYSTEM

Most of us have a busy lifestyle and some of us just cannot be bothered to wait 7 to 21 days for whitening results. If this is your case, this system is designed to suit your lifestyle.

Having your whitening done in the dental practice is a safe and effective way to whiten and brighten your teeth in a fast and safe way.

Having in chair whitening performed permanently changes the base colour of your teeth to a white based colour. Teeth whitening needs maintenance as the main cause of teeth discoloration is ageing, but it may not be necessary to have the in-chair whitening done again, as you can top up your whitening using a take home whitening system.

What to expect

Before your whitening starts, we will ask you to choose a movie or TV show on Netflix and give you a neck pillow and earphones. We will then discuss with you any concerns and start your treatment by placing a cheek retractor in your mouth to hold back your lips. We will then place a barrier on your gums to protect them from the whitening gel. After all safety measures are completed, the whitening gel will be applied to your teeth and an LED light will be used to activate the whitening gel so it works faster. The gel will sit in your teeth for 15 minutes while it works. This process will be repeated 3 to 6 times, but don’t worry, we will darken the room so you feel like a cinema experience.

 TAKE HOME WHITENING SYSTEM

If you don’t like sitting in the dental chair for a long period of time, this system is designed for you! The take home whitening system is a simple and efficient way of whitening your teeth, as its name says, at home.

If you decide on this option, we will take impressions of your teeth and create custom-made trays that will only fit you. You will then wear your trays with the whitening gel for 7 to 21 consecutive days or until you are happy with the results.

As in the Office system, using a take home whitening system permanently changes the base colour of your teeth to a white based colour. Your teeth can still stain and discolour over time, but is easier to maintain the white, bright look by topping up your whitening every 6-12 months. Topping up your whitening can be done using your take home whitening trays and gel. Take home whitening trays can last decades if kept properly and if you have had no major teeth changes. You can keep your left-over whitening gel in the fridge if not opened or expired. But once you run out of the gel, just come in as we always have them on stock!

Post-Operative Care

Increased tooth sensitivity is common when whitening teeth, regardless of the system used. You may experience such sensitivity during the whitening treatment to varying degrees.

If you experience sensitivity, there are several ways to relieve it:

* Replace your regular toothpaste with a sensitive toothpaste for the next 2-5 days, such as Sensodyne or Colgate Sensitive Pro Relief.
* Apply a pea size amount of Toothmousse or Sensitive toothpaste to the tooth/teeth that are more sensitive (Do this throughout the day and try to not consume food/drinks or rinse for as long as possible).
* Use the Desensitising trays or gels provided
* Take painkillers such as Nurofen, Advil, Panadol (follow the advice your painkiller medication box for instructions or contact your GP if you are unsure of which pain medication you can take).

 Check these FAQ’s!

Is tooth whitening going to damage the tooth enamel?

There is no permanent damage to the enamel or any other tooth structures by tooth whitening, therefore making it very safe if done under professional supervision.

Does tooth whitening cause permanent teeth sensitivity?

Sensitivity from tooth whitening is always transient. Therefore, if there is any sensitivity, it goes away within one to two days after the treatment, and the patient returns to the state of sensitivity he or she had prior to starting the teeth whitening process. There are several desensitisers on the market to help alleviate symptoms.

Am I a candidate for tooth whitening?

Most people are candidates for tooth whitening, but again, each situation is unique and it’s best to contact us and ask for a FREE WHITENING CONSULTATION. Generally, almost everyone can have teeth whitening if their gums and teeth are free of disease. It is very important to have teeth and gums checked by us before the procedure.

How long does tooth whitening last?

Typically, you can expect whitening to last from six months to two years, although some studies report results lasting up to 10 years. Avoiding red wine, coffee, and smoking—all of which can cause staining—helps preserve the results. Opalescence Go is a very affordable way to “top up” your tooth whitening from time to time.

Does tooth whitening affect white fillings, veneers or crowns?

Tooth whitening has no effect on restorative materials such as porcelain or crowns or white fillings, so that is why we recommend a check-up before whitening procedures, so we can discuss with you the best way to handle any concerns.

If your teeth appear too small, uneven, chipped, or have dark stains, porcelain veneers may be a great choice for you.

A Porcelain (ceramic) Veneer is a thin piece of porcelain that covers only the front of your tooth. It is a fixed porcelain cover that is glued over the tooth structure and is mainly done on front teeth.

A Veneer is used to improve the looks and cosmetic appearance of your teeth. Some of its uses are to create a whiter smile, to help teeth look straighter, to change the shape and length of teeth, to cover stained teeth and chips or to help close gaps between teeth.

At Buderim Dental Surgery, we are partners with one of the best ceramists in Australia, and we create custom-made porcelain veneers that will match your face, your smile and look natural and even.

They will straighten your teeth using a series of clear, custom-made, removable teeth aligners which gradually adjust the alignment of your teeth over time. When the process is completed, you will enjoy a new revitalised smile!

The best braces on the Sunshine Coast are clear! The aligners must be worn continuously except for eating and drinking or brushing/flossing your teeth. The period of treatment varies with the severity of any misalignment and other factors specific to your needs.

Dental emergencies are no joke. Below are just some examples of dental emergencies.

DENTAL TRAUMA

Dental trauma happens when a tooth is knocked, generally as an accident. It is more common in children and usually affects the front teeth. Dental trauma can cause teeth to fracture, the gums to bleed and sometimes cause a lot of pain. Regardless of the severity of the trauma, any trauma is considered an emergency, so please contact us as soon as possible and as quickly as possible as time does matter in these cases.

 DENTAL OR GUM ABSCESS

Dental or gum abscesses are a dental emergency and should be treated immediately. They usually cause immense pain and swelling and if left untreated, can spread and become dangerous general health situations if not treated properly.

BROKEN TOOTH

Broken teeth can be emergencies if they are causing pain or are sharp and cutting your tongue. If you have a broken tooth that is not causing pain or discomfort, it still needs to be treated to avoid potential problems such as pain, decay, nerve damage and even tooth loss.

A crown (also referred to as “cap”) is a “helmet” that covers your tooth 360 degrees and it is used to protect and strengthen the tooth. It is fixed cap that is glued over the prepared remaining tooth structure. Crowns are the treatment of choice for a tooth that has been damaged by root canal, grinding, decay or fracture as they are likely to break from the stress of daily use. Dental crowns will help strengthen a heavily-restored tooth to prevent future fracture, restore loss of tooth structure from heavy grinding, improve tooth aesthetics and relieve pain from any damage or fractures.

A crown is prepared by removing precisely 1.5mm to 2mm of filling or tooth structure off the top and sides of the tooth. After the preparation is completed, we will take 3D scans of your teeth which are then, sent to our partner Australian dental laboratory to construct the crown. A temporary crown will be made and glued to your tooth and it stays on the tooth while your new crown is being made. About 3 weeks later, the temporary crown will be removed and your new crown is ready to be glued onto the tooth. All of our crowns and cosmetic crowns and veneers are Australian made as we are proud to support our local industry.

Post-Operative Care

Do not eat any sticky, very hard to chewy foods while you have a temporary crown as it may come off or break. If your temporary crowns come off or breaks, contact us immediately.

Your new crown can be treated like a normal tooth, however with some glues it can take up to 48 hours to fully set. Sometimes you may experience some sensitivity for a few days after your new crown is glued, and it is very normal.

Sometimes if anaesthetic was used when your new crown was glued you may feel like the crown is hitting before the other teeth. Always gauge your new crown by seeing if you are biting normally on the other side. Wait for the anaesthetic to wear off to see if the crown still feel’s high. If it does feel high after the anaesthetic has worn off, contact us for an adjustment.

Our work with children is tailored to help them develop good attitudes to dental care and hygiene. We work hard to ensure they grow up with good memories of dental visits.

At your child’s first visit, we introduce them to our team and the practice. We then ask them if they want to watch a cartoon or movie and then if they would like to sit in the dental chair. If they do not want to sit in the dental chair, we do not push them to! Instead, we try to show them our mirror, and triplex (water and air tool, A.K.A Mr Blowy).

Usually after showing them that our tools are not scary, they sit in the dental chair and allow us to look at their teeth!

During a child’s examination, we thoroughly look at their teeth, gums, soft tissue, bite, cosmetic appearance, old fillings, chewing function and jaw to identify any problems such as pathologies, tooth decay, gum disease and skeletal problems (need for braces).

At the end of the appointment, your child will be given rewards such as stickers, balloons and a dental pack!

As we get older, more of us are keeping more of our teeth into later life, making dental health an important part of ageing. Having healthy teeth and gums or correctly fitted dentures are very important for overall health and wellbeing.

Our need for dental care treatment as we age continues and may increase: you may find that old fillings crack and need repairing, and as gums recede more of the tooth root is exposed and at risk of decay or infection.

Dentures may also need to be replaced as the shape of the mouth continues to change.

Teeth are more prone to problems due to natural and pathological wear and tear and certain medical conditions. It is very important that you advise us of all medical conditions and medications you are on as this may affect your mouth, teeth, procedures and healing.

Some of the dental concerns that are associated with advanced aging are:

  • * Darkened or yellowing teeth
  • * Root Decay
  • * Dry mouth
  • * Tooth decay
  • * Stomatitis
  • * Gum disease
  • * Aging restorations
  • * Bone loss
  • * Ill-fitting dentures

Dental anxiety and fear (A.K.A dental phobia, odontophobia) is a common fear that either stops patients from making appointments at the dentist or makes them reluctant to receive or return for dental treatment at all. Dental anxiety is a natural response when someone has had a traumatising experience at the dentist such as a:
* Painful experience during or after treatment
* Embarrassing experience

* The feeling of being judged
* Frightening experience, even from a childhood dental visit
* A lack of control during dental treatment
* A lack of understanding of the dental treatment

We understand it all and have treated hundreds of people just like you! And remember, we do not judge! Instead, we listen to you and your concerns.

We believe that with special care and management techniques we can help you or someone you know recover from their traumatic previous experience. We will start slowly and never push you to do something that you do not feel comfortable to do. Depending on the person, the first visit may not involve any dental treatment if requested. Building trust and relationship with you is the foundation of making a positive dental experience.
Some of the strategies that we may use with a nervous or anxious patient are:

* Have a happy and calm practice
* Use positive, clear and honest words
* Offer a stress ball, blanket, music, movie, headphones
* A support person to attend with them
* Create a signal system with the patient on what to do if they need a break
* Keep our promises, for example “this treatment will take 20 minutes”
* Use a show and tell technique with instruments and tools for better understanding
* Deep Breathing techniques
* A hand to hold
